Pollard was waiting when the lift opened to Mayer’s private office. His displeasure at being kept waiting was not disguised.

‘I was here at the time you requested, twenty minutes ago. I was about to get out of here.’

‘There was a delay at Blackbushe,’ answered Mayer without elaborating. He entered his office and told his PA to hold all calls.

Pollard stalked into the room. ‘What is it now? I got you the names. You’re pushing your luck, Mayer.’

‘I’ve cleared it. You already know that, or you wouldn’t be here. I realise you’ve not volunteered.’

He moved to one of the sofas whilst Pollard remained standing and then continued. ‘You confirmed that Dr Garcia and the girl, dos Santos, arrived a couple of days back. Biggin Hill, I think.’

‘And?’

‘They are both wanted in Jakarta.’

Pollard scoffed. ‘Good luck on that.’ He laughed. ‘I guess they can apply for extradition.’

‘As you are aware, that can take months, if not years.’ Mayer continued. ‘General Usman wants them back as soon as.’

Pollard shrugged. ‘And how would you suggest that can happen? This isn’t Jakarta. We don’t just grab people off the streets and put them on planes without a legal process.’

‘That’s why you are here and not a solicitor. You can, to coin a phrase, think outside the box. And this can be characterised as a national security issue.’

‘Don’t embarrass yourself. Why should we care?’

‘This major arms deal depends on it. We’ve been through that.’

‘I could tell you to go screw your arms deal.’

Mayer leaned back. ‘But you can’t.’

Pollard moved toward the door. ‘Perhaps I can.’ He then hesitated. ‘Tell me the story. What the hell is this about? Why does your idiot Usman want them anyway?’

Mayer spoke deliberately quietly so that Pollard, had to reluctantly come closer and sit down opposite the banker.

‘Garcia is a doctor and Usman believes he could have saved his son but instead let him die. Usman considers he should be tried for his negligence in Jakarta – at a fair trial, I stress. The girl is the daughter of one of the rebel leaders he claims was also involved in his son’s death. She’s the bait to get him down from the hills.’

‘So where are they right now?’

‘The girl is in Great Ormond Street hospital, and Garcia is in and out of there keeping an eye on her together with a nurse who came with them. Her name is Maria Bell.’

‘What do you want then, Mayer?’

‘Pick them up and hold them for just a day or two. The Indonesians will take over from there. It will be up to them to organise their return to Jakarta. So you can then just walk away.’

‘Fair trial!’ Pollard shook his head. ‘What bollocks. You’re asking me to organise the kidnap of these two and hand them over to a foreign power.’

‘Ten thousand pounds for you and five each for up to four men.’

Pollard stood up again and walked over to the window. There was a pause, he didn’t look round as he eventually responded.

‘The doctor, OK, but forget the girl.
